The Site

Site map showing site section, buffer areas and boundary
Located in Bald Hills, a 79 ha area of land (pictured above), designated Rural under Brisbane City Council's City Plan, is the subject of a development application. The site is generally bounded by Linkfield Road, Gympie Road, the North Coast rail line and the South Pine River.
The site is owned by The Neilsen Group who are proposing to extract the sand and gravel from the Bald Hills site. Neilsens operate sand and gravel extraction operations in Brendale on the western side of the river. Extracted material will be processed and transported through its Brendale site (via Johnstone Road).
The State Government has identified areas for sand and gravel extraction throughout the state, known as Key Resource Areas (KRAs), under State Planning Policy 2/07: Protection of Extractive Resources. KRA 60 is located in Brendale (across the western side of the river) and Bald Hills (on the eastern side of the river, north of Linkfield Road). The Draft Bracken Ridge and District Neighbourhood Plan acknowledges the site’s significance as a sand resource in Section 2.5.
